Illuminations
This piece measures 1m x 3m and was exhibited at the Pataka Gallery in Porirua, just north of Wellington in July-September, 2008. The Professional Weavers Network of New Zealand organized the exhibition, which was called 'Light Waves'. The work was made of tencel hanging threads, with fibre optic cables inserted among the threads. A light source, (LED) was mounted above the work to carry the light through the fibre optic cables. |

White Banner "Inner Circles'
 |
This hanging is woven in cotton/polyester thread, with the circles made
transparent by a devore technique which dissolves out the cotton content
of the yarn. These hangings can be hung against a light source or free hanging.
There are three layers to this hanging and the circles are viewed through the
layers, providing an ever-changing view, depending on the angle it is seen
from.
This is a technique I taught myself while on an Arts Council grant in the UK
in 2005.

Collapse Weave Dress
| I wove this in 2/2 twill, with stripes of very
fine Merino wool alternating with stripes of a slightly thicker wool,
separated by two threads of silk. When washed the yarns shrank
differently, causing the fabric to pleat and fold. The fabric is very
fine and gauzy. The dress and wrap were designed by myself and Sylvia
Campbell again. Sylvia twisted gold thread into fine straps, and made
loops so the wrap is held at hip height. The lower edge of the dress and
train is oversewn so the pleats form scallops.

Paua
 |
This wrap, woven in with a polyester and rayon yarn, demonstrates how the dèvorè technique works. The rayon content has been dissolved, leaving semi-transparent areas in the cloth. Remnants of paua shell decorate the fringes. |
Commission
| This large piece is an example of a commission I wove for
a private house. The client suggested various designs, I chose
the one I thought best suited to a woven work, then wove a sample
piece, and sent it to her, with drawings and yarn samples. She chose
the final colours. The client on her acceptance of the design paid a
deposit of one-third of the final price.
The work was woven in three pieces, to gain the required
width of 80 ins (2m), and then strips were woven, threaded through each other,
then sewn onto the background to form the design.
Hangings such as this are easy to post as they are unbreakable and can be rolled up to pack.
Consultation between the client and myself allows a work to be designed to fit specific spaces,
both public and in private homes. Woven hangings, which can be in wool, silk, cotton or linen, can soften large expanses of wall area. |

Possum/Merino Ruana
 |
This ruana is an example of the many pieces I weave in this lovely
light and airy yarn, which is unique to New Zealand. The yarn is 60%
merino and 40% possum fur and I make scarves, ponchos, wraps and
throws in this delightful yarn and in a wide range of colours. Knitted
socks and gloves are also available.
